Building the Software Behind a Lab Instrument

Our client was developing a benchtop colony counting device and owned the hardware and the market, but needed a software partner to make the instrument usable in a working lab. We took that layer end to end. IncuCount drives the camera and multi-channel lighting, captures petri dish images under repeatable conditions, and runs a configurable detection engine that counts colonies in seconds. Operators review and correct on screen, then export audit-ready PDF and CSV reports, with every run stored in searchable local history. The software ships with the instrument.

01 Overview

Instrument software
Hardware partnership
Ships with device

Colony counting is done by eye in most labs, which is slow, tiring, and hard to reproduce between operators. The client needed their device to remove that variability. We turned it into a guided workflow: pick a validated sample profile, capture under controlled light, and get a counted, reviewable result with a full record behind it.

02 Challenges

Repeatability
Hardware control
Mixed media types
Operator usability

Counts had to stay consistent across plate media, colony sizes, and lighting conditions, while the software also had to drive real hardware — camera and relay-controlled lamps — and stay usable for lab staff who are not imaging specialists.

03 Approach

Electron
OpenCV
Python
Relay lighting
Sample profiles

We built an Electron application over an OpenCV detection engine, with locked camera controls, top and bottom light channels driven through a USB relay board, and admin-approved sample profiles that carry tuned detection parameters so operators never configure the algorithm by hand.

04 Results

PDF and CSV export
Analysis history
Manual correction
Built-in assistant

A shipping instrument application: counts in seconds with manual add and hide corrections, color grouping and inhibition zone modes, PDF and CSV export with sample IDs, searchable analysis history with the exact parameters used, and a built-in assistant trained on the product manual.
